The Piwakawaka Gathered

As we sat in a boat on the river Clutha in silence we saw
The Piwakawaka, which are held by Maori in awe.
They believe the fantails assemble to portend the end.
The Piwakawaka came and gathered – around our friend.

Next day, as we stood in silence in front of the fantail waterfall,
Came the trouble that the fantail birds had heralded hours before.
We knew not yet what loss and grief was to come
Or the hole in our lives that would need to be overcome.

The Piwakawaka carry the souls of people passed away.
They come and gather not to rejoice in our loss and decay,
But to let us know that when we are left behind at the end,
They will be there, ready and waiting to take care of our friend.

Mary was such a steadfast and loyal friend. Our love and thoughts go out to Greg, Carmel, Kylie and her family and also to the Binding family.
