  2. Bruce,
I don’t think there are enough words to properly describe what you mean to the people lucky enough to know you. You weren’t just my best friend’s dad — over the years, you became someone who hold’s a special place in my heart.

I’ll always be grateful for the laughs, the advice, the conversations and stories and all the little moments that probably didn’t seem significant at the time, but that I’ll now treasure forever.

Your memory and essence will live on through the people who love you, the stories they tell, and all the lives you touched and the love you gave that still remains with each of them.
Rest peacefully, Bruce. You will be deeply missed.

  3. We didn’t know you a long time, but youve left a huge impact and legacy on the young boys and girls of Naoero. Every weekend ( for years to come) kids who could never have afforded to go surfing, will be riding the waves thanks to your kindness, support and generosity. You’ll be long remembiered here Bruce and I hope you look down and give a hoot when the kids catch a good wave. Thank you very much ( Tubwa kor) from the people of Naoero.

  8. Where should I start?

A death certificate may serve as proof that a death has taken place, but it is the legacy you leave behind that shows how you lived. JL.

In the course of life, the people we care about most are often taken from us too early, and we have great difficulty in understanding why this happens, since there is no explanation; it is only through the way we live our lives that we honour the legacy they have left us.

I would like to express my love for my good friend Bruce Fishwick. On a summer day in 19__, Bruce tapped me on the shoulder in the showers at the Moorabbin swimming pool and gently remarked, “My name is Bruce and I’m a born-again Christian.” Those words had a profound effect on me. Although my faith has at various times come and gone, Bruce and I have always maintained a curiosity regarding life. We had many hours of in-depth conversation, during which at times we would arrive at a truth that both of us felt but could not explain.

We both had a great love for reading and would frequently discuss the books that interested us, no matter if they were on subjects such as psychology, philosophy, Christianity, history or anything else. I really enjoyed the conversations we used to have in the early morning, since they were at times extremely deep. The fact that we were different ages never bothered us.

He showed a great deal of sensitivity when talking about his family, and it was admirable to hear how much he loved them. Although I regret not having seen Bruce’s family grow, I do want to congratulate Jody on the strength she has displayed since losing Bruce.

Unfortunately, due to our age and health, both my wife Virginia and I will not be able to attend our dear friend’s farewell. That said, we are thankful that we can watch the service online.

  9. Dear Jodie and family.
So sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved husband and dad and father -in-law.
We only met him a few times, and he seemed a very genuine, caring , interested man. He was full of curiosity about life, feelings, and what was happening.
We are so pleased you were able to spend a lot of time together in his last days. The rooms at Leongatha Hospital are beautiful, spacey, and filled with the light of the surrounding countryside.
Our prayers and love to you all, and will continue .
    Love Joanne and Craig Stuchbery

  11. I remember meeting a smiling cheeky 11 year old on holidays from boarding school. We laughed, we roamed around Black Rock, Half Moon Bay and got filthy clambering over the Red Bluff cliffs. All sorts of mischief ensued.

Bruce you were a good friend then, and later. With some people you never quite sure where you stand but with Bruce you were never in any doubt. His smile, his warmth and genuine interest in you were all real.

Deepest sympathies to Jodie and the family for your immeasurable loss.

  12. So heartbreaking and surreal to lose such a wonderful, gentle, strong, kind, wise and funny human being. Feeling so grateful and proud to have had you as my big brother for this adventure.

I know you’re leaving a huge hole in the hearts of all the Fishwick family.

I know that every time I hear a Queen song I’ll think of you. Or if I ever get to surf again, it was you who gave me my first lessons – and gave Tony his in Bali. That you had a special sound for cats that was something like churce?!That you were the one who got me into road cycling. That you were there for mum. That you found a wonderful woman and raised 3 fabulous and kind children. And sooo much more.

I also know I’m going to need a bucket for my tears, and a lot of tissues on hand for your live stream service, because it’ll be a wonderful testament to you and your life, and to the love shared and memories that will be held dear.

I’m so sorry not to be there for some proper healing hugs, but I am sending the biggest hugs and all my love to you Jodie, Sami, Nic, Ethan, Emerald, Chase, Sandra and Adrian, and all the Fishwick Family for today and in the days to come.

Love from Natalie/ Aunty Nat and Uncle Tony.
