September 10, 2026Our dear Ma,
September 10, 2026
So many memories come flooding to mind. Checking the chook shed for eggs, feeding the kittens on the back verandah and making milky tea for the dolls. Putting seed out for the rosellas and picking proteas on the slippery grass. Piano lessons that progressed slowly. Pa crying when you played the Black Hawk Waltz. Teaching me to make a strawberry shortcake. Not breaking a sweat when the car broke down on a steep uphill incline. Smelling the daphne when we popped by to visit. Trying to remember the names of all your cats that came and went. Watching the rolling hills out the back window and seeing the Leongatha lights twinkling at night when we had sleepovers. Making so many crafts with Possum at Girl Guides. Trying to learn to knit. Borrowing our jumpers back to put in the Show. Gifting our girls knitted jumpers and booties in every colour. Who knows what other creations you had kept hidden away “in a safe place”. A house full of hidden treasures. I’ll never forget your little handbag with a vicks drop or a teeny tiny water bottle. Your cuddles. Your grammar lessons. Babysitting us on the weekends while you watched the bill, the fire burning and tapestries and plates lining the walls. Your comfy armchair with all your crosswords and magazines within reach. Discussing the royal family. Spilling secrets about our family.
Saturday morning visits and weekly Sunday roasts. Christmases, Easter Eggs rolling down the hill. A ginger fluff sponge for every birthday. Your frankness. And your love. Spawning generations of teachers. Spawning generations of hoarders.
Life won’t be the same without you.
We will always remember to do our good brownie deed for the day.
Rest in Peace Ma.
Love Viva, Leo, Beanie and MielCondolences to all the family. Possum was a fixture at Leongatha Guides for so many years, we are eternally greatful for all her years of hard work.
